Roblox Friend Requests: Teaching Your Child to Say No to Strangers

A huge number of Roblox’s safety problems — scams, grooming attempts, harassment — start with the same small step: a friend request from someone your child doesn’t actually know. Teaching them to be selective about who they accept is one of the highest-leverage safety habits you can build.

Why Friend Requests Matter So Much

Being "friends" on Roblox usually opens up more direct contact — private messages, joining each other’s games, seeing more of each other’s activity. A stranger who can’t message your child directly often tries to get there by simply asking to be added as a friend first.

What a Legitimate Friend Request Looks Like

  • ✓A classmate or real-life friend your child actually knows outside Roblox.
  • ✓Someone from an extended family or a friend group you, as the parent, are aware of.
  • ✓A sibling’s friend your child has met in person.

Red Flags Worth Teaching Directly

  • ✓A stranger who compliments their avatar or skill and quickly asks to be added as a friend.
  • ✓An offer of free Robux, items, or currency in exchange for accepting a request.
  • ✓Pressure or guilt-tripping — "add me or I’ll leave the game" — used to force a quick decision.
  • ✓A profile with no friends, no avatar customization, or a very new account sending lots of requests.

The Family Rule Worth Setting

Keep it simple and repeatable: only accept friend requests from people you actually know in real life. If your child isn’t sure, the answer is to ask a parent first, not to accept and figure it out later.

Pair the Conversation With the Setting

A conversation alone isn’t enough — back it up with the actual privacy setting that controls who can send your child friend requests and contact them in the first place. That setting matters more for younger kids than any single conversation will.
