Apple Screen Time, Google Family Link, or Roblox’s Own Controls: Comparing the Three Layers

Parents often ask which parental control system they should use for Roblox — Apple Screen Time, Google Family Link, or Roblox’s own settings. The honest answer is that they do different jobs, and most families end up needing more than one at the same time.

What Apple Screen Time Does

Screen Time works at the device level on iPhones and iPads. It can limit total daily app or device use, restrict app downloads and purchases, enforce downtime windows, and require approval before installing or buying anything — including Roblox itself and any Robux purchases made through Apple’s App Store. It has no visibility into what happens inside Roblox once the app is open.

What Google Family Link Does

Family Link is the Android and Chromebook equivalent — it manages a child’s Google account, sets app time limits, requires approval for new app downloads and in-app purchases, and can restrict content by app rating. Like Screen Time, it works at the device/account level, not inside Roblox’s own game or chat systems.

What Roblox’s Own Controls Do

Roblox’s parental controls operate entirely inside the Roblox ecosystem: content maturity levels, who can chat with your child, friend request handling, and spending limits specifically for Robux. None of this is visible to Screen Time or Family Link — a device-level time limit doesn’t know or care what your child is seeing or who they’re talking to inside the game.

Where Each One Actually Matters

  • ✓Total screen time and bedtime cutoffs → device-level tool (Screen Time / Family Link)
  • ✓Blocking unapproved app downloads or purchases outside Roblox → device-level tool
  • ✓What content and games your child can access inside Roblox → Roblox’s own settings
  • ✓Who can chat with, friend, or message your child inside Roblox → Roblox’s own settings
  • ✓A hard cap on Robux spending → Roblox’s own settings (device purchase approval helps too, but Robux-specific limits live in Roblox)

The Honest Takeaway

Device-level tools and Roblox’s own controls aren’t competing options — they cover different ground. A device limit without Roblox’s in-app settings still leaves chat and content wide open during whatever time is allowed. Roblox’s settings without a device-level time limit still leave total screen time unmanaged. Most families get the most coverage using both together, rather than treating one as a full substitute for the other.
